The Baccalaureate is a national test in Romania, a high school exit exam, also known as "Bac". It was introduced in 1948 and is one of the most important tests for the admission to universities in Romania. The name stems from the French word baccalauréat, which means "born with a silver spoon", referring to the large amount of money needed to pay for secondary education. In 1964, the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs launched an modernization process that included a new way of evaluating students' results in order to expand access to higher education. This reform increased the selection criteria for subjects taught at primary and secondary schools. In the academic year 1967-1968, the school leaving certificate was introduced for students from grade 10, which included all subjects taught at primary and secondary schools. In particular, the certificate granted access to "liceu" (the Romanian name for a high school) and it constituted a basis for identifying students with special talents in mathematics, physics and chemistry. According to the new standards, the certificates obtained by grade 10 students were evaluated according to a new system: candidates received points depending on their results in all exams taken throughout high school. The Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs created a Commission that reviewed each candidate's file based on this system. The new exam, named Baccalaureate, was implemented in the academic year 1968-1969. The most important change was the introduction of the program "matematica pentru liceu" ("mathematics for high school"), which included six mandatory subjects: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Integration and Calculus. This program was mandatory for students with a science or technical diploma that were seeking admission to "liceu", with a grade of 5 on the final exam pupils were allowed to choose two additional subjects from among those listed above. In 1989-1990, several changes were introduced. The evaluation of students' results was based on the program "Matematica pentru liceu" plus four elective subjects: biology, chemistry, physics and history. It was the only option for high school students to choose between. In 1996-1997, for the academic year 1997-1998 , the Baccalaureate exam was modified again. This time it included six mandatory subjects: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Integration and Calculus. These six subjects were distributed into three different programs: "matematica pentru liceu", "matematica si informatica" ("mathematics and computer science") and "sfintii barbati" ("holy men"). 8eeb4e9f32 55
